Akrotiri

The earliest settlements can be traced back to 5000BC, but the site is all about a Minoan town built during the Bronze Age, starting round 3000BC.

It met its end in the 17th century BC, Initially hit by an earthquake, then shortly after buried by ash and pumice when Thera erupted. The lack of bodies and valuables like gold, suggest that the inhabitants had time for an orderly exit before the eruption.

The city itself was very advanced, with multi-storey houses, internal plumbing, good drainage, beautiful frescoes and intricate high quality pottery and paved streets.

Note the quality of the table. It is a plaster cast from a holow in the ashes, as the wood had burned away.
