Sunday June 16
The early part of the day mirrors our previous ploddings around the Trevi fountain, the Pantheon, and the Piazza Novona. A lot more people today, so I am just going to stick with the original photos.
Next stop was the catacombs. Unfortunately they do not allow any photos, and are very strict and vigilant.
In the site we went to, there are 11km of tunnels. It is cool and fresh, but in the days of rotting bodies…
While the rock looks hard, it is actually volcanic tuff – compressed volcanic ash, and quite easy easy to excavate apparently.
Basilica of St Paul outside the walls
Reputedly the burial place of St Paul
Around the edge of the ceiling, are icons of all the popes, with the date and length of their papacy.
The burial site of St Paul. Poor bugger must have been dug up re-buried about 27 times by my count.
This is the Easter candlestick:
The chains that were used to chain St Paul to his guards prior to his execution.
