Day 11 – Syracuse

Tuesday June 25

Syracuse

It is another warm day. (OK it’s bloody hot again)

A boomerang trip today to Syracuse.

Syracuse is on the Ionian coast of Sicily, Italy. It’s known for its ancient ruins. The central Archaeological Park Neapolis comprises the Roman Amphitheater, the Teatro Greco and the Orecchio di Dionisio, a limestone cave shaped like a human ear.

The archeological site is where the Carthaginian slaves were kept, and used to mine the limestone.

The remains of the sacrificial altar. (Animals not people) Free BBQ at the end – cheaper than a Bunnings sausage sizzle.

Dionisio’s Ear

Rumoured (16th Century) to be an eavesdropping cavern, taday it echoed magnificently to a good old Aussie ‘cooee’

The totally bastardised ampitheatre.

Ortigia

Ortigia is a small island in Syracuse, and is considered to be the historical centre of the city.

Statue of Archimedes

After the churches, including the one with an original Caravaggio that doesn’t allow photos, time to lose myself in the back alleys. (did I mention that it is still bloody hot??)

The scattered crowd regathers:
